Case Study: Albem - A $290M Infrastructure Challenge

Albem is part of the joint venture delivering Stage 1 of the Bruce Highway upgrade between Dohles Rocks Road and Anzac Avenue — a $290 million project in one of Queensland’s fastest-growing traffic corridors. With more than 150,000 vehicles passing through each day, the corridor is a critical link between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.

Stage 1 focuses on constructing extended north-facing ramps and continuous auxiliary lanes, supported by major intersection upgrades, new ramp metering technology, large-scale earthworks, drainage upgrades, pavement works and noise barriers — all delivered within a live motorway environment.

At this scale, the project generates a significant number of dockets daily across multiple work fronts, a high volume of subcontractors and continuous material movements.

The Challenge

On a project of this size, with multiple work fronts and a high volume of subcontractors and material movements, the biggest challenge is maintaining accurate, real-time visibility over dockets, historically relying on a mix of paper-based processes and manual data entry, which created delays and made reconciliation time-consuming.”
Gary Christian, Albem

Managing volume, complexity and risk simultaneously meant that paper-based docket processes were no longer viable. Dockets captured manually across multiple work fronts created delays between the point of activity and head office — slowing reconciliation, creating administrative bottlenecks and limiting the team’s ability to track costs in real time.

The Solution

Digital docket capture at the point of activity

Docketbook was introduced to replace paper-based processes and give Albem real-time visibility over dockets across the project. The platform integrated into existing site workflows with minimal disruption, enabling teams and subcontractors to transition quickly to digital docket capture.

Streamlined subcontractor management

The system has worked particularly effectively for plant hire companies and the majority of subcontractors at the site level. Dockets are now captured digitally at the point of activity, reducing duplication, improving accuracy and ensuring information is available in real time for approval and reconciliation.

Faster invoice approval

With dockets flowing digitally, the time required to approve invoices has been significantly reduced. The administrative burden of processing invoices — previously dependent on manual docket handling — has been materially reduced across the project.

The Results

Since implementing Docketbook, Albem has seen meaningful improvements across docket processing, administration and commercial control.

  • Reconciliation that previously took days can now be completed far more quickly
  • Administrative support required to process invoices has been significantly reduced
  • Clearer real-time visibility over what is happening on site, supporting better decision-making
  • More efficient approval processes, shortening the time required to obtain invoice approval
  • Faster, more informed responses to site issues as they arise

“At the site level, the system has worked well and greatly helped us with subcontractor and supplier management. It has certainly helped us reduce docket management time, including efficient approval, and shorten the time required to obtain invoice approval.”
Gary Christian, Albem

Looking Ahead

As the project matures, Albem plans to fully integrate Docketbook with its head office cost management processes. Once complete, the team anticipates further gains — including the ability to monitor productivity in real time, enabling even tighter commercial control across the project.

For Docketbook, the project reflects exactly the kind of complex infrastructure delivery where real-time docket management makes a measurable difference.

“On high-volume infrastructure projects like this, real-time docket management isn’t just a convenience — it’s critical. We’re proud to be working alongside forward-thinking contractors like Albem to help drive more efficient, data-led delivery.”
